For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
Neither. Neither grace nor faith. Neither were mustered by us out of some internal recess.
Grace: the unmerited favor of God offered to us. What does the scripture say about faith?
3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
Romans 12:3
What is the measure, by which faith is meted to us? The KJV has this “the measure” instead of “a measure”. Is it the same for everyone, or does the article leave the way open for different measures to various individuals?
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”
Galatians 2:20-21
If Christ lives in us, it is His faith. That is the measure. We then live by faith. Does this seem like a circular argument? Notice the passage in Galatians 2 is filled with reference to His giving of Himself and the grace of God. If that is not clear enough, verse 21 emphasizes that our own effort is ineffective.
Thank You Jesus, for coming to live in us if we will only accept your awesome gift!
